Baseball Uniforms

The Grandstander took some heat last week and was accused of being an old crank because of his opinions on how players wear their baseball uniforms. I present to you two examples of players in uniform - Old School and Current Day.

You tell me which one looks better.

  1. Bob, I agree with you; Whitey Ford looks better. But times change, tastes evolve. Look at how Basketball shorts have "grown". I've gotta' admit, films of the old short-shorts in the Bill Walton era look creepy. (Let's not even get into tatoos). Wow, I just found an old CYO basketball team photo, circa 1959, of the St. Philomena "Philies". (Yeah, it was spelled with one "L"). Your brothers and I are showing a lot of leg. So I guess change CAN be good.

  2. I like it when they have their socks showing. I don't like the pants down around the ankles either. They look very, very sloppy.

    GO CAVS!!!!

  3. Wish I knew how to post photos in a comment. Bob - Here're my thoughts:

    Current day – Ubaldo
    I like: pin stripes, hi-socks

Current day – Carlos and Dexter
I like: pin stripes, loose is fine – just look at their smiles

A few years back - Can’t have them too tight or tucked in for this player
When I first started really getting into baseball, I would wonder why a baseball player has a hockey puck in their pocket…

  4. Remember when baseball sox had stripes? Barry Zito is bringing this back with the SF Giants.

I like the Zito look, and hate the CC Sabathia pajama bottoms look.

  5. I felt the contrast could best be shown by comparing the classic NY Yankees pinstriped uni (unfortunatley, no pic of CC in home togs was readily available) then and now. To coin a phrase, a picture (or two) is worth a thousand words.

Just to prove that I am not a hidebound old fossil, I DO agree with BigPoppy that the current style of basketball shorts are an improvement over the old style nut-cutters.

Unfortunately, the links to pics posted by Loyal Readers Dave and megminard are not actual links, nor can they be cut-n-pasted (any suggestions?), and I don't have the patience to type them in my browswer window. I think that I can imagine the pics, however. I agree, Dave, that the striped socks are a good look and should be brought back

  6. Bob - I was able to see Meg's and all the links posted. Try highlighting over the link with your curser, R. click, and hit copy. Place curser into your address bar, and R click and click paste, hit enter to send it.

  7. Got it, Dave. I, of course, know how to do that, but for some reason it wasn't working for me last night. However, after consulting with Joe Kemper, I know have it under control and was able tro view all posted pics.

    Keep those pics coming, folks!

  8. Dave - Agreed. Zito looks good.

Some minor league teams have striped sox. Here's the Springfield Cardinals. At this game every single player wore their sox like this.

Think I like Barry's look better. Think it's the black and orange.

  10. Thanks to Dave and Meg for backing me up on the uniform issue. As for those unis from the 1970's...whew! Although, the Bucs won a World Series in those togs in '79, so I can't be hatin' on them too much.

I remember living in Cleveland when the Tribe wore those all red uniforms and Boog Powell was described (I can't remember by whom) as looking like "a giant blood clot."
