Iconic Pittsburghers

The recent death of famous traffic cop Vic Cianca prompted an interesting article in this morning's Post-Gazette about "iconic Pittsburgers." Not sure I agree that all of the names mentioned fall into the category of "iconic" (Bill Hilgrove??), but it was interesting nonetheless, and I thought I'd pass it on. The "aht-a-tahners" reading this might be especially interested.

  1. I read the article in the PG as the Grandstander suggested. I never heard of many of those named. Who is Paul O'Neill? Surely not the ex-Yankee right fielder. Bingo O'Malley. Is it possible that he is the same Bingo O'Malley that was a counselor at Camp Rosary in circa 1955? Two of the names I absolutely agree are iconic Pittsburghers: Beano Cook and Mossie Murphy.

  2. That is indeed the same Bingo O'Malley that led such never-to-be-forgotten camp songs as: Eir ist tine musikantor, Are you a Polar Bear, Tell me Why, and (thanks to Sq Hill it was accurate) Cheer up Annunciation, For the Worst is yet to Come.

  3. Glad to see that the link within the body of the post worked. Getting more techno-savy by the day!

Did you check out those video highlights on the Bucs' website yet?

  4. Actually, I could not get the link to work. Had to go to P-G site. I went to Pirate Site but could not get the plays to play. Did they include Delwyn Young catching the ball Garrett Jones kicked into the air - and the umpire missed!

I suspect you connected it correctly, don't know what happened.

  5. I too was not able to get the link to work. I went to the PG on-line edition to find the column on the iconic Pittsburghers. Who knew then that Bingo O'Malley would become an iconic figure? I very well remember the Polar Bear song and the chant aimed at the chumps from Annunciation.

  6. DY's catch was one of the plays from which to choose. Four of the ten plays involve ex-Bucs. Two for Jack Wilson and one each from Freddy Sanchez and Nyjer Morgan.
