Ah, yes, this coming Sunday evening, the Broadway theater will bestow its annual Tony Awards for excellence in the 2017-18 Theatrical Season.
As has become a custom, The Grandstander cedes this space to the Blog's Official Broadway Correspondent, Bill Montrose. I need not remind you how impeccable his record for prognostication has been in the past in this space.
Take it away, Bill.....
Respectfully Submitted to THE GRANDSTANDER
Despite my physical absence from the "Great White Way" this past Spring, I am pleased to submit my annual prognostications re. the Antoinette Perry Awards to be presented this Sunday on CBS. Here goes:
BEST PLAY ………………………. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
BEST MUSICAL …………………. The Band's Visit
BEST MUSICAL REVIVAL ………Carousel
BEST ACTOR (MUSICAL) ……… Ethan Slater (SpongeBob SquarePants)
BEST ACTRESS (MUSICAL) ……Katrina Lenk (The Band's Visit)
BEST BOOK (MUSICAL) ………...Tina Fey (Mean Girls)
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE ………..David Yazbek (The Band's Visit)
BEST FEATURED ACTOR ………Ari'el Stachel (The Band's Visit) ……. I'd really like to see Norbert Leo Butz (what a great name) capture his 3rd Tony for playing Alfie P. Doolittle in My Fair Lady, but Stachel's my pick.
BEST FEATURED ACTRESS ….. Lindsay Mendez (Carousel)
BEST DIRECTOR ………………... David Cromer (The Band's Visit)
So there's my 10 for this year. Yes, I'm leaning pretty heavily on "The Band's Visit" to win big. It is definitely the Critic's "darling" ... (although not mine).
I'll be watching ... and as the Man says: "Watch, but don't bet!".
As always, many thanks, Bill. We shall be watching and issuing your "report card" come next Monday morning.
Bill Montrose - our man on Broadway. Move over Seth Rudetsky
